Keeping Your Vehicle Secure

A recent press conference held by Norfolk Police Chief Bruce P. Marquis and covered by The Virginian-Pilot J0435871_3  touched on some trends in auto theft and vandalism in Hampton Roads. Of course, we know that having a vehicle broken into or stolen is a really lousy thing, just an emotionally and financially draining experience. I thought it was worth passing on a few tips on theft prevention from the police department.

  • Never leave keys unattended.
  • Store valuables in the trunk. Keep high value items like GPS units, iPods and laptops out of sight. The NPD also recommends storing docking stations because they can indicate that a device is in the glove compartment or console.
  • Document serial numbers of portable devices.
  • Secure your license plate with theft deterrent screws which you can buy at auto parts stores.
  • Lock your doors. Roll up windows and close sunroofs, even if you’re just running inside for a moment (this is one I need help with...I always, always forget the sunroof!).
  • If possible, park in well lit areas.

Even a residual suction cup ring on the windshield is a giveaway that a device has been in use in the car.

Good point Dave!
